Where can fires occur?
Aviation fuel, oil and gas, hazardous substances or waste for incineration all pose a major fire hazard.
If a fire occurs, it can spread quickly in these highly flammable materials, with a high risk of spreading further to surrounding buildings, production facilities or aircraft. In addition to the risk of equipment damage and personal injury, fires in such materials also pose a major pollution hazard in the form of toxic fumes and vapours.
At the same time, helipads and helidecks, for example, are a matter of life and death – whether evacuating from drilling platforms or landing at hospitals – where a safe landing is crucial for the lives of the crew, staff and patient.
It is therefore essential that fires in such materials are prevented or stopped as soon as they occur.
Hazard areas where fire extinguishing via foam systems is particularly effective include:
- Aircraft hangars
- Helipads and helidecks, e.g. at hospitals
- Conference and sports centres
- Warehouses with hazardous materials (PGS-15 warehouses)
- Offshore helidecks
- Storage and transport of oil and gas
- Tugs and rescue boats
- Sprinkler systems
- Waste incineration.
